In a never ending quest to discover new creative directions I’ve been known to depart in any number of ways. May I present a prime example –

Something Wild

A while back I was reviewing a series of photographs to select which were worth keeping. It goes without saying, usually, that a high percentage of pictures end up getting tossed. I’ll occasionally hang on to those which fall under the “maybe” category but eventually the decision has to be made.

There are times when I’ll put in the effort to enhance a picture just to provide extra emphasis. In most cases these adjustments will be undetectable but beneficial. There are other instances when simply letting loose and trying something different never hurts.

I’m always on the lookout for new and different photographic effects just to stretch my muscles creatively. From there it’s all trial and error whether there’s any benefit to be had.

Provided here is the end result of a late night experiment with a new effect which helped save a very plain photo from obscurity.

This originally was a barren plain bush in front of a fence.

Sushi!

Seems almost a waste to simply eat and enjoy our recent Valentines Day dinner. Why not seize the opportunity and take a few quick photos before it’s all gone?

Shameless

Paul Koskinen (@paulkoskinen) • Instagram photos and videos

Perhaps it was boredom or the need to simply be up to no good but today was the ideal time to explore a little shameless Instagram self-promotion. There’s no way I’m going to pay them or anyone else for efforts that would result in marginal results at best. Besides, I’m a Starving Artist!!

So, in an effort to inject a little extra humor into and otherwise straightforward art blog I posted the following…

Attention: I need to reach 10k followers in 48 hours or they send me back to the salt mines just outside of Narnia. This time they may not be kidding!
In the meantime, here’s a painting-

It’s been roughly three hours so far and I’ve accumulated 23 “likes” but, alas, no new followers. Guess I’d better get used to creating abstract art in that Salt Mine!

Reviewing archival material when this little gem caught my eye. It was a highly productive year so most recollection of making the piece had vanished but I do like the end result.

Only The Finest

Today being Valentine’s Day and I trying to live up to the reputation of being a hopeless romantic today had to bring something special. We face extraordinary circumstances so extra points are awarded for creativity and originality. I have modest amounts of both.

Since dining out was completely out of the question the next best thing would be picking up food from the very establishment we would have frequented in the first place. On days like this they are doing brisk business with orders overflowing everywhere.

So we set up our own version of a fine dining experience at our place complete with opera emanating from the nearest iPhone. Paper napkins instead of silk and everyday plates instead of fine china; you get the picture. Overall our dicount experience suited us just fine.

All that remained was putting the iPhone to work before sitting down to eat…

An Artist can be occasionally better understood through the trajectory their work has travelled rather than simply viewing current effort.

My own path as been varied and sometimes unusual. The evolution can be traced yearly where differences are easy to distinguish. Provided here is a sample of where my creativity was back in 2018.

Friday Flowers

So much can be accomplished simply by owning a cellphone camera and having way too much time on your hands.

Irises

Trying to keep this post lighter and slightly whimsical so what could be more suitable than a look back on the summer. Here we take a trip to the Royal Botanical Gardens in Glasgow, Scotland.

It was a remarkable opportunity to take photos of so many wonderful species in a variety of colours.

Photography Fun

It seems to be occurring more often lately where an ordinary bland snapshot is almost begging or even the slightest enhancement to become more memorable. While I have neither the time of interest in becoming a Photoshop expert, playing with a few basic functions can be rewarding.

At this point in the year I’m really hoping painting season starts earlier than expected as I don’t think the world of photography can tolerate much more of this abuse. 🤣
