Still Learning

Now that the required art materials needed to continue my current style have basically disappeared from the marketplace I’ve been further working in the visual medium of photography. Sure, there have been many attempts to alter my style to better suit those supplies still available but the results have been less than inspirational.

So currently I’m photographing any number of subjects which are relatively easy to access and simply trying a slightly different approach to give the viewer something to look at from a fresh viewpoint.

I’m intrigued by the processes which occur after the initial photo has been taken. Small adjustments here and there can make a significant difference to an image; making a good photo into an almost great photo. The tricky part for me is to improve the photograph in such a way that the viewer never detects that anything has been adjusted at all.

The learning curve has been steady but rather slow at times. Progress comes primarily from regular practice using trial and error. I have complete final say as to how the picture will turn out so there’s still plenty of creative control to exercise.

It’s an interesting field that still allows me to remain in the visual arts without have to learn exhaustive amounts of material regarding something I know little about in the first place.

Not meaning to sound like a fossil but my first childhood camera was a Kodak Brownie!

This photo was originally taken in a nature preserve under the brightest afternoon sun. No, that’s not me holding the rather expensive gear. I’m all iPhone photography!

As The Days Get Shorter

I’m not pleased at all now that gradually there’s less daylight with each passing day. We’ve had enough of a time with one seriously rough winter season already. The cold in conjunction with a global pandemic made it challenging for all.

Time to once again accept a constantly changing reality and make the most of what we have.

Let It Rain

Seems we’re in the midst of a rainy season for sure. More often than not there’s some kind of downpour happening. It presents a challenge when I want to get painting but offers some great opportunities for photography.

Herb Garden

Just one example of how inspiration can be drawn from the most unusual sources.

Was wandering around with the iPhone when a growth of Basil struck me as interesting and full of possibilities. Finally took about six photos from different angles and decided to post the best here.

Just goes to show you should keep an eye out for opportunities.

2nd Dose!

With yesterday’s administration of a 2nd vaccine shot it’s safe to say we’re doing our part in the recovery. Still living in a state of heightened quarantine due to ongoing caregiver duties but it’s all worth it.

Good to see some restrictions being cautiously lifted provided everyone conducts themselves in a responsible manner. Only time will tell.

Until news arrives to do otherwise the masks stay in place and basic distancing guidelines are the rule of the day. Such a minor inconvenience considering all the good it will do for so many in the long run.

Very Wet

Weather conditions for today – very wet indeed! But in the spirit of making the most of the situation I decided to take a photo or two just to hopefully develop those skills further.

Jury is still out if there’s been any actual improvement.

Yup, it did rain throughout the day.

Rain at Dawn

Early morning rain can lead to more reasonable temperatures, calmer breezes and near-perfect painting conditions for several days to come. Sure, the ground has to dry over the coming hours but after that the real fun starts!

Macro Practice

Heavier rain during recent days hasn’t helped the abstract painting efforts in the slightest but it has opened up opportunities to practice some iPhone photography skills.

This morning was a great chance to see how close I could get to a subject while remaining in focus. The results may be far from pro status but I’m a painter so we’ll have to settle with a rating of – passible.

Busy, Busy, Busy

Everything todays seemed to fall into place just right so I was determined to make the most of it. Shortly after dawn saw hours dedicated to the all-important art pursuits which were carried out as far as I could take them at that stage.

Throughout the remainder of the day I could be found mowing the lawn, washing the car, taking care of laundry along with the regular obligations already in place. I’m almost sure there are other completed task which came and went but I’m not the kind to make lists of such things.

Usually each day starts with only a rough idea what may actually go on since procrastination is still one of my more dominant traits. Luckily things do fall into place and get done for the most part.

Took a couple minutes for creative photography and editing for my own amusement. Some would consider the subject matter questionable but sometimes testing boundaries can yield favourable results.

Hopefully after the sun sets I won’t be left with the usual feeling that not much was done with the day at all. We’ll find out shortly.
